Pulpectomy

Child-Friendly Sedation

A pulpectomy, often called a "baby root canal," is a pediatric dental procedure used to save a primary (baby) tooth that is severely infected or necrotic. Unlike a pulpotomy, which only removes the top portion of the pulp, a pulpectomy involves the complete removal of all soft tissue (pulp) from both the crown and the root canals

Why It Is "Easy" for Parents

The "One and Done" Factor:

Extensive work (multiple fillings, a pulpectomy, and crowns) that would normally take 4–5 stressful appointments can be finished in a single visit.

Emotional Shielding: Parents don't have to witness their child’s distress or "hold them down," which prevents the parent-child bond from being strained by dental trauma.

Zero Resistance: There is no "battle" to get the child into the chair. The child simply "takes a nap" and wakes up with their dental health restored.

No "Bad Memories": Because of the amnesic effect, the child doesn't develop a lifelong fear of the dentist, making future routine visits much easier for the parent.

Nursing bottle decay

Nursing bottle caries, also known as baby bottle tooth decay or early childhood caries (ECC), is a severe form of tooth decay that affects infants and toddlers, typically between ages 1 and 2. It is characterized by rapid destruction of primary teeth, most commonly starting with the upper front teeth.

Causes and Mechanism

  • Sugary Liquids: Decay is triggered by frequent, prolonged exposure to liquids containing sugars, such as milk, formula, fruit juice, or even breast milk.
  • The Sleep Factor: The most common cause is putting a child to bed with a bottle. During sleep, salivary flow decreases, allowing sugary liquids to pool around the teeth.
  • Bacterial Action: Bacteria (mainly Streptococcus mutans) feed on these sugars and produce acids that attack and demineralize the tooth enamel.

Myobraces orthodontics

Myobraces orthodontics

The Myobrace® System is a preventive, pre-orthodontic treatment designed to address the root causes of crooked teeth—such as mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, and thumb sucking—often eliminating the need for traditional braces. It is a non-invasive, removable appliance system typically used for children aged 3 to 15.

How Myobrace Works

Unlike traditional braces that force teeth into position with wires, Myobrace focuses on myofunctional therapy to retrain oral muscles and guide natural jaw growth.

  • Habit Retraining: Teaches the child to breathe through their nose, rest the tongue in the roof of the mouth, and swallow correctly.

  • Arch Development: Uses light forces to widen the jaws, creating enough space for permanent teeth to erupt naturally straight.

  • Daily Routine: The appliance is typically worn for 1–2 hours during the day plus overnight while sleeping, supplemented by daily "Myobrace Activities" (exercises).

General Anesthesia

Myobraces orthodontics

General Anesthesia

In General anesthesia (GA) for pediatric dentistry, the child is in a medically induced state of complete unconsciousness. This approach is used when a child cannot safely or effectively be treated under local anesthesia or lighter sedation.

Key Indications

Extensive Treatment: Used for "full-mouth rehabilitation," where multiple crowns, fillings, or extractions are completed in a single session.

Age and Cooperation: Recommended for very young children (pre-cooperative) or those with extreme dental phobia.

Special Healthcare Needs: Children with conditions like Autism, Down Syndrome, or Cerebral Palsy who require a highly controlled environment.

About Teddy Bear Pediatric Dentistry

Brushing methods

Standard Brushing Techniques

Fones (Circular) Technique: Ideal for preschool-aged children who lack advanced muscle coordination.

1.Place the toothbrush bristles against the teeth and gums.

Move the brush in large, gentle circles over the outside surfaces.

2.Brush the chewing surfaces with a back-and-forth motion.

Horizontal Scrub Technique: Often recommended for younger children under age 6-7 as it is the most natural motion and effectively removes plaque for that age group.

Modified Bass Technique: Recommended for older children (generally over age 7) or those with specific gum needs.

Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle toward the gum line.

Use small, gentle vibrating or circular motions on each tooth.

Sweep the brush away from the gums.

Key Brushing Rules

The 2-Minute Rule: Brush for at least two minutes, twice a day (morning and before bed).

Spit, Don't Rinse: After brushing, children should spit out excess paste but avoid rinsing with water to allow the fluoride to continue protecting the enamel.

Positioning: For toddlers, it is often easiest to have them lie on your lap or stand behind them in front of a mirror to ensure you can see all surfaces.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends scheduling a first dental visit by the child's first birthday or within six months of their first tooth appearing

Pediatric Dental Restorations

Common Pediatric Restorations

Dental Fillings: Used for small to moderate cavities.

Composite (Tooth-Colored): A resin material that matches the natural tooth color.

Glass Ionomer (GIC): Often used in younger children as it releases fluoride, which helps prevent further decay.

Dental Crowns: Recommended when a tooth has extensive decay or has undergone a pulpotomy (baby root canal).

Stainless Steel Crowns (SSC): The "gold standard" for back molars due to their extreme durability and cost-effectiveness.

Zirconia Crowns: A highly aesthetic, white ceramic option often used for front teeth.

Strip Crowns: Composite resin molded over the tooth using a clear plastic form, common for aesthetic front-tooth repairs.

Space Maintainers: If a tooth is lost prematurely, these devices prevent adjacent teeth from shifting, ensuring the permanent tooth has room to erupt.
